If, like me, you would rather avoid the high-speed train that is the A96 Dundee to Aberdeen dual carriageway; then take the scenic road. This is the B955 Edzell to Banchory road, which takes you directly to or from deepest Aberdeenshire.

The Clattering Brig Licensed Restaurant & Tearoom is a convenient stopping-off point, three miles north of Fettercairn. Parking is up a steep road to the left of the restaurant.

The Tearoom itself is a wooden sixties type building set up on a raised position. The interior décor is confusing: walls are wood & tartan panelled, with pictures depicting country scenes as well as plates and stag’s heads. There is a stone fireplace, floors are covered with blue and grey carpet tiles and red and blue plastic covers are on the tables, this plastic effect completed by the hanging baskets. On the up side there are large windows presenting views across the hills, and of the buzzards outside circling the trestle tables.

Clattering Brig offers the usual combination of hot rolls, toasties, and sandwiches. Cakes, scones, pancakes, meringues and shortbread are either home-baked or from the local bakery and presented on a cakestand at your table.

High Teas are served at weekends between 4 and 6. Full meals are also available. The staff are friendly and welcoming and when we were there the loos were impeccably clean.

Why should I go there? Convenient stopping-off place on the A955

Any negatives? The fittings are somewhat tired.

Before or After:
1. Continue north to the summit of Cairn o’Mount where there is a road side view point.
2. There are many places, including the view point, where you can walk off into the heather.
