Luss is a beautiful conservation village on the western shores of Loch Lomond. As a sign at the car park tells us, this was the setting for the mythical highland village of Glendarroch in the ‘successful’ STV soap ‘Take the High Road’. You can be the judge as to whether it was successful or not, but yes, it was better than ‘River City’!
In the circumstances there might be a temptation for a coffee shop to become a rather tacky theme café, but not here! First you have to negotiate Gary the Highlander and the highland muzak in the shop at the entrance, but after that it gets much better. As the mantelpiece above the open fireplace laden with awards will testify.
Yes, you will be served Lomond Latte and Luss Expresso, and my favourite, Clyde Cappuccino, ‘with the aroma of a popular extrovert with a frothy personality’. Mr B described the taste differently, but then he does come from Edinburgh! ‘Cathy Tierre’ is fresh coffee served with milk. There is a selection of teas, including gunpowder and keemun, fruit juices, smoothies and an extensive range of soft drinks. There is an excellent display of cakes, and other delights include Munro Muffins, cinnamon toast, and luxury Orkney Ice Cream.
We were given a choice of five hearty soups, each served with a door-stopping slice of generously buttered bread, which can be followed by ‘Stokies’ (traditional soft bread rolls) served with a selection of salads, ciabatta or pasta. If all else fails why not try haggis, neeps and tatties!
The Coffee Shop is split into two rooms, dark wooden ceiling beams with spotlights and Scottish landscapes on the yellowish walls. The tables are apparently made from salvaged packing crates. There are armchairs by the fire and doors open out onto a furnished patio with tables and parasols. The Coach House is non-smoking.
The shop offers good quality shopping with ceramics, candles, soaps, toys, food and confectionery. A range of clothing featuring the Loch Lomond District tartan is available.
Why would I go there? Loch Lomond! And the Coach House.
Any Negatives? Luss can be overwhelmed by tourists at times.
Before or After
1. Walk on one of the four Luss Village Paths – see the excellent leaflet on display. Our favourite is the 30 minute ‘Slate Quarry Path’. Take your dog – but watch for sheep!
2. Visit the last paddle steamer built in Britain, ‘PS Maid of the Loch’ berthed at Balloch – see website - www.maidoftheloch.co.uk. Unfortunately it no longer sails.
3. Shop at Jenners at Loch Lomond Shores – a loch front retail experience at Balloch on the A82 road from Glasgow.
