Not exactly on those bonnie banks, but traveling from the east or north towards Loch Lomond you are almost there when you reach Drymen, and are probably looking for a stopping place and a cup of coffee.
Drymen Pottery looks on to the village green. The front is a gift shop, which you need to pass through to reach the conservatory area at the back where you find the coffee shop. There is an open fire, which was extremely welcoming on the morning we visited. You are surrounded by a profusion of shrubs and trees and the autumn scene, viewed through the large windows, is brought indoors by the choice of table coverings. The walls are covered in seascapes, Hebridean, according to my resident fount of all knowledge.
Outside is a secluded seating area set amidst the shrubs.
The menu offers a large variety of delicious home bakes, baguettes, baked potatoes, sandwiches and kiddies’ meals. Their homemade jam was really excellent though rather runny. Mr. B used it as a dip for his scone to ensure he ate it all!
It seems a popular local venue, though this meant a constant flow of people to the area at the rear, which interrupted the calm of our visit, especially as we were sitting adjacent to this thoroughfare. A large toy box is available for children, which is good, however, it meant we were subjected to constant noise, which is bad.
Why should I go there? Light, bright and excellent bakes.
Any negatives? The decaf coffee was not good the day we were there .
Before or After:
1. If you want to stretch your legs, go to the Library which is on the left side of the village green and ask for a leaflet called ’Walks from Drymen’- the walks come in all lengths from 10 minutes to several hours- or
2. From the square walk downhill past the war memorial. The Buchanan Arms Hotel is on your left but to your right, beyond the iron gates a path leads to the top of the hill where there are superb views of Loch Lomond and the mountains. It’s only 10 minutes or longer depending how long you stay there.
