Consistently mentioned when good teashops are being discussed, Kind Kyttock’s Kitchen fully lives up to its reputation. Set in the heart of historic Falkland its situation alone would draw you inside.
Once you are through the door low ceilings, a blackened stone fireplace with the swing ready to put the kettle over the fire and small windowpanes are what you are greeted by. Add to this, windows covered with soft toys, paintings on the walls, a curious selection of paper hankies with bambies, Santas, flowers, angels, an old clock ticking in the corner and a veritable pipe band of piping bears on a shelf. It may sound tacky but it most definitely is not. The tables have green and white checked covers, and there are dark wood, farmhouse style chairs.
There is also an equally charming upstairs, which opens when there is extra demand.
The food is freshly prepared on the premises and all baking, including bread, is prepared daily. Soups, omelettes, baked potatoes, toasted sandwiches, salads, scones with their own jam, clootie dumpling (highly recommended) apple tart, cakes, pancakes and much more.
Its curious name, refers to Kind Kyttock a character in William Dunbar’s poem ‘The Ballad of Kind Kyttock’. She was a good woman who, when she died, found that the ale in heaven was too sour. So she went outside of the heavenly gates to a tavern, where she pours good ale for thirsty travellers to this day.
Why would I go there? Excellent fare and atmosphere
Any Negatives? Scones not big enough to use all that lovely jam.
Before or After:
1. A walk round this historic town and a visit to Falkland Palace which the Stuart Kings used as a lodge when they hunted deer and wild boar in the forests of Fife. Summer only.
2. Drive 11/2 miles west to the Craigmead car park, which is already over 300m, and from there you can walk to the top of East Lomond (4km) or West Lomond (7km) Hills or both! The views from the top are fantastic. Take care for sheep if you have a dog!
