The Coffee Merchant is a functional coffee shop on the corner of Merchant Square in Glasgow's much revived & trendy Merchant City area. It claims to be "the place to meet in The Merchant City" but given the multitude of hip, surrounding bars and eateries, this may be a touch of wishful thinking for what is essentially a generic, albeit unbranded, coffee outlet. This undoubtedly suits the clientele, which would most commonly be made of city business types in for a quick sandwich and pick-me-up. Weekend traffic is much lighter and the snack selection suffers for it.
The corner site on the square lends itself to a triangular layout with a curved outside wall dominated by four large windows and seventies style glass block bricks. These, together with the light décor, create a light filled interior and allow you to enjoy Glasgow drifting by!
There is a brisk carryout trade at all times, but particularly during the week. For those who choose to take the weight off: furnishings comprise a mixture of vibrant sofas, comfortable armchairs, tables & chairs; walls feature colourful photo-collages of Glasgow (which are for sale); newspapers are available; and the background is of insistent rock music (some do linger). There is also the option of sitting in the square itself, a covered central area, half farmers' market and half airport departure lounge, sometimes overtaken by unruly young children or occasionally a local craft fair.
Even if you take the option of a seat, you must order at the counter where staff are bright & enthusiastic, if not always efficient. You can create your own coffee from Coffee Merchant's selection of flavours & toppings or take your pick from a variety of teas, freshly squeezed juices, milk shakes & smoothies. There is also the usual selection of freshly baked pastries, muffins & scones and even homemade sandwiches (baguette, white or wholemeal bloomer), soups, hot paninis, tortilla wraps, toasties, bagels, salads & baked potatoes.
An AM (breakfast-type) menu, which includes items like "big bacon baguettes" and ham & cheese croissants, is available weekdays between 8 to 11; and weekends 10 to 12.
Why would I go there? Friendly & efficient neighbourhood coffee shop and carry out.
Any Negatives? Perhaps you would not linger here for as long as "Friends" do at "Central Perk"
