‘A palace of pleasure and imagination around which the people may place their affections and which may give them a home on which their memory may rest'. So said Lord Roseberry at the opening ceremony in 1898. More than 100 years later the Peoples’ Palace still lives up to this promise, giving an entertaining and informative overview of the story of the people and city of Glasgow from 1750 to the present day.
At the back of the People’s Palace is a huge glasshouse with palms and all kinds of exotic greenery and it is here that you will find the café. On the freezing cold day that we visited, we found it warm, bright and welcoming and we could enjoy the impression of alfresco eating despite the low temperatures outside. Patio heaters stand ready should the temperatures drop even further.
Apart from scones, croissants, pastries and cakes, not home baked but perfectly acceptable and Costa coffee; there is all day breakfast including a vegetarian option, bacon or sausage baps, steak and onion pie, hot mozzarella rocket and tomato baguette, baked potatoes, sandwiches and a special children’s menu.
All the staff were very helpful and smiling.
Why would I go there? A surprising and informative experience in the heart of Glasgow
Any Negatives? This is somewhere to go for the surroundings rather than the food.
Before or After:
1. Enjoy the exhibits on 3 levels of the Peoples’ Palace and the Doulton Fountain outside.
2. A Walk on Glasgow Green or along the walkway beside the River Clyde
