It was like reaching the end of the earth when we finally arrived at Peel Farm. Thick mist surrounded the farm and the rest of the world had disappeared. Now I know how Chris Columbus felt (that is he of Santa Maria, not Prisoner of Azkaban, fame). Being based on a working farm, the mood was heightened by a rumbling soundtrack of cattle being loaded on to lorries, somewhere in the mist.
The coffee shop gives you a little glimpse of farm life from years ago, with stone floors and walls, and shelves which abound with memorabilia from shears, scythes and halters to stone jars, gin traps and snares as well as some other paraphernalia to whose use I can only hazard a guess. There were also many photographs of prize-winning ewes and rams, and a wood burning stove at one end, providing a cosy place to sit when the weather is chilly.
There is a varied snack type menu with homemade soup and sandwiches, using locally baked bread, and a variety of fillings. Light lunch comprise toasted panini, sandwich or warmed croissant with a filling, coleslaw and salad. There was also an excellent choice of cakes, tray bakes, muffins and fruit breads to go with your coffee and tea.
A shop offers quality crafts, knitwear paintings and photography for sale and there are also craft workshops available throughout the year. A farm shop supplies local produce.
Why would I go there? It's off the beaten track and almost at the back of beyond.
Any Negatives? Difficult to get to – we took various scenic routes!
Before or After:
1. Go on the walk past the deer Park and through the farm land with its various animals on your way to the Gorge and Waterfall on the River Isla. Wildlife abound in this area. Otters, Mink, Owls and Woodpeckers, to name but a few, have all been spotted.
