Whether waiting for the ferry to Mallaig, or having just arrived, the Stables Restaurant provides a quiet and restful haven.

Set in what were the old stables for Armadale Castle, it has been adapted well to its present use and even won awards for its renovation. The restaurant area is in the style of a baronial hall complete with minstrels' gallery and heraldic shields, while a raised area to the rear enjoys a view over lawns and woods, apparently where the dung heap was once located. Although, with its bagpipe based ‘musak’ and tartan trim, ‘The Stables’ has clearly been designed for the tourist market, it has been done well, and we can forgive it for its sins.

The staff is welcoming and cheery, but the food is self service. There is a varied selection of scones (with jam and cream), homebakes, jacket potatoes, soups, sandwiches, a full range of coffees, but no decaf! There is also a discreet bar area in the corner with a full range of beers including Black and Red Cuillin and Hebridean Gold. ‘The Stables’ is open from 9.30 to 5.30 but last orders for food is at 2.30.

There are tables outside, should the weather oblige, and the overall mood is very relaxed.

Why would I go there?
A good way to unwind, ready for the single-track roads ahead.

Any Negatives?  It is catering for larger groups, mainly tourists.

Before or After:
There are many walks close by from 1 to 3miles in length where dogs are welcome ( under control). This is organised by the Lands Trust Path Network.
