Driving north up the A9 then taking the road through Dalwhinnie on the A889 is one of the routes from the south to Fort William and the Isle of Skye. There are not many stopping off spots, other than the larger venues catering for groups, so The Kiln Room, situated just before you join the A86 in Monarch of the Glen country, is a welcome sight.

It is set in an attractive courtyard surrounded by restored farm buildings, and offers tables inside and out. It has been left (or is it still being renovated?) quite rustic outside but this adds to the Highland, 'back of beyond' feel.

It offers home bakes, scones fruitcake and carrot cake as well as soup and sandwiches: all served on attractive tartan themed pottery.

A wide range of gifts, knitwear, clothing, cards and pottery sourced from all around the UK and beyond is available in the shop past the coffee area.

Why would I go there?
Especially pleasant should the weather allow you to sit outside.

Any Negatives? If you ask for decaf coffee you are committed to a cafetiere whether or not you want it and an increased price on the regular.

Before or After:
1.
Stretch your legs a little further down the road in the nearby Clashathie Country Forest.
2. The kids might be interested in the Laggan Wolftrax which is 2 miles further west which offers mountain bike trails at various levels
3. Walk in the spectacular scenery.
