Sweetheart Abbey was founded in 1273 by Lady Devorgilla of Galloway in memory of her late husband John Balliol, who was forced to take the throne of Scotland by Edward I but was later stripped of the title when he did not bend to Edward's wishes. When she died in 1289, her body was laid to rest before the high altar and a casket containing her husband's embalmed heart, which she had carried with her for the last 21 years of her life, ‘her sweet, silent companion’, was placed beside her. The Cistercian monks chose the name ‘Dulce Cor’ or Sweetheart, in her memory.

Is that not romantic? And the teashop continues the theme, being situated in an old cottage surrounded by charming flowers.

There is a wide selection of homemade soups, salads, baked potatoes, panini, toasties and home bakes. The toppings and fillings are slightly different, for example: hot smoked salmon, crème fraiche and horseradish; brie, red pepper and tomato chutney; bean and hazelnut pate with mango and ginger. Ingredients are locally produced and often organic.

There are 16 tables and French doors lead out to more on a patio looking on to Sweetheart Abbey. The room is painted a fresh yellow, and embroidery samples hang on the walls. The music was calming guitar and pleasantly understated.

The tearoom has received many awards for excellence over the years.

Why would I go there? Lovely setting next to the Abbey and lovely food.

Any Negatives?  Can be very very popular.

Before or After:
1.
Visit the picturesque and historic Sweetheart Abbey and the fascinating New Abbey Mill.
2. The beaches and scenery of the Solway Coast are just a short drive down the road.
