There are some coffee shops where you don’t bother to take your jacket off, and others where you settle in and make yourself comfortable, confident that you will enjoy your time there. The Orangery is one of the latter.

Set at the back of a gallery and gift shop, it is bright and warm. Paintings and prints hang four deep on the walls, mainly the work of Scottish artists. There is a profusion of flowers (artificial I know, but you have to look closely to tell).
Basket chairs with coloured cushions are placed around mosaic and glass topped tables, and piano music plays quietly in the background.

Various coffees and teas are served with a wafer roll. Home bakes and scones, soup, filled rolls, panini, baguettes with interesting fillings (like stilton and mango chutney or mozzarella, pesto and sun dried tomatoes) are available if you are hungry. Wine and liqueur coffees are offered and specials are written up on very attractive chalkboards.

A ramp leads down to the shop at the front, which sells a wide range of paintings, prints, ceramics, glassware, jewellery, cards, gift ware and candles: all in excellent taste.

Why should I go there? An excellent coffee shop.

Any negatives? It's away from the centre but well worth the walk.

Before or After:

1. Visit the Scottish Seabird Centre. Cameras on the islands beam back live panoramas,  there are interactives, a telescope deck and fantastic views. Plenty for the young and the more mature!
2. Go for a walk on the beach or up Berwick Law.
3. Enjoy a boat trip out to the Bass Rock.
