The walls are plastered with elephants featured on T shirts, in newspaper articles, ornaments, old prints and contemporary depictions. At the back there is usually a display of local artists’ work.
There is usually a buzz of conversation from larger groups as well as individuals passing the time with a book, newspaper or catching up on their studies.
It is self service although if you order a cooked item or one that is not pre-prepared they will identify you with a 'spurtle' and bring it to you later.
Foods range from filled rolls, baguettes and panini, cakes and pastries to cooked meals like meat and vegetable chilli, quiche, spinach and feta in filo pastry. There are various teas and coffees available.

Any Negatives? When it's busy you'll find it hard to get a seat.

2. Turn right on leaving the coffee shop and Greyfriars' Bobby is a few yards along the street. Then turn down Candlemaker Row to explore the Grassmarket.
3. Turn left and you are a short distance from the High Street.
