Club Room, The Dome

The Club Room, at The Dome, has mirrored, black American walnut walls and crystal chandeliers. But none of this opulence is original; all of it has been recreated from the Georgian Head Office of the old Commercial Bank of Scotland.

There is a choice of coffees, hot chocolate, tea, soups and sandwiches, while the wine list is even longer!

However, there is a downside. Our experience over a number of visits to The Dome is that the food does not quite match the setting. On a recent visit I was offered a modest serving of a rather characterless soup, while the chips served with Mr. B's otherwise acceptable sandwich were distinctly cool! The food is, nonetheless, beautifully presented by the smart, formally attired, international waiting staff (When were you last served by anyone with a local accent in an Edinburgh Bar or restaurant

If The Club Room is closed, the vast and more spectacular Grill Room next door may serve coffee. It is well worth visiting: Palm Court without the trio.

I would particularly recommend going to The Dome in the run-up to Christmas. The lavish Christmas décor – inside and out – is exceptional.

Why would I go there?   The decorationis really outstanding.

Any Negatives?  Apart from the presentation, the food doesn't quite match the setting.

2. The shops along George Street – this is retail therapy territory.
3. Walk around the New Town.
