Johnstone’s Cashmere is situated beside Elgin Cathedral and includes a visitor centre where you can see how the quality knitwear and tweeds are made and view the various products for sale.

When you’ve seen it all you will be ready for the coffee shop. It is set behind the shop area in an addition to the original building, which sets it apart from the rest of the structure. Two of its walls show the original stone and one side is all glass and looks out onto a magnificent statue of cashmere goats. The final wall exhibits artwork. The ceiling inside shows the trusses and the general colours are slate grey and blue: very bright, airy, restful and pleasing.

Locally produced and seasonal ingredients are favoured. Fresh soups, sandwiches, baked potatoes, paninis, bakes and hot puddings are on the menu. When we were there, pineapple upside down cake and apple pie and custard were the special puddings of the day.

On the wall in the coffee shop, a mark shows how far the floodwater rose in 1997. Quite amazing!

Why should I go there? Good fresh cooking in a modern setting.

Any negatives? Can be quite noisy when busy.

Before or After:
1.
Go on a tour of the factory.
2. Enjoy a walk through the grounds of the Abbey.
3. Visit the nearby Biblical Garden where all the plants mentioned in the bible are to be found.
