The Milton stands in a glorious setting on the wooded banks of the River Coy about 100yds from where it joins the Dee. After parking in the well laid out car park (there's even space for a helicopter should you have the need) and crossing a little wooden bridge over the lade, which would have turned the mill in days gone by, you are faced by a completely restored farm courtyard beside the grassy banks of the Coy. The five buildings contain country clothing, art and sculpture, a craft studio called ‘The Boorachie’, ‘The Studio’ which is extremely well stocked with needlework materials and expertise to match (it’s a haven for quilters) and of course the dining room and conservatory.

Entering the restaurant you first pass through a reception area with comfy suede chairs and sofas and a huge brick fireplace, then on to a more formal but extremely well laid out dining area before reaching the conservatory.

The size of the scones is comparable to their deliciousness, and they are huge! ( Sorry, but I visited recently and although the scones are still delicious they have been reduced in size.) Various types are available with daily specials such as stilton, parma ham and chives, which was the choice on the day we visited. Freshly made soups with home made breads, sandwiches, wraps, light meals and not so light meals are also available for example fishcakes, swordfish Caesar salad, vegetarian open lasagne and excellent desserts.

Why should I go there? Excellent food in an excellent setting.

Any negatives? Eating all of the scone – they really are huge.

Before or After:
1.
There’s a track between here and Crathes Castle through the woodland.
2. Check out the old railway next to the car park.
