We are probably more aware of Brechin as a name in the list of classified results read out on Grandstand on a Saturday afternoon or as one of the bypassed towns we glance at as we speed up (or down) the busy A96. However it is worthwhile taking the time to visit it and become acquainted with The Old Bakehouse coffee shop.

The Old Bakehouse is situated in the High Street in a building whose first documented evidence dates back to 1768. When the building was renovated a child’s shoe and an order book with dates in the 1850s were found. These are now displayed on the mantelpiece above the old range, which was brought up from an old tenement in Glasgow, along with flat irons, a stone hot water bottle and Wally dugs.

On entering, the stone flagged floors, the range with a small rug in front and green panelled walls give character and warmth. However the area to the left which is down a step, is disappointing in comparison.

The toilets deserve special mention as they have been beautifully decorated to reflect the old world charm.

The full range of coffees, hot chocolate and various teas are offered. Very tasty soup with slices of excellent bread cut an inch thick, sandwiches, breakfasts, baked potatoes and a wide range of cakes and bakes are also available. It is very popular with the locals and endorsed by the nearby school’s teachers as a window table was reserved for their lunchtime use!

Why should I go there? An alternative to the roadside provision on the A96.
Any negatives? The left side of the coffee house does not have the charm of the right hand side.
Before or After:
1.
Visit Brechin Cathedral.
2. Enjoy Skinner’s Burn Walk.
3. Continue on your journey north or south.
