The Victoria is a long-established, traditional tearoom occupying the first floor of a corner site on Union Street. The cliché that it attracts an older clientele is just that - a cliché! It deservedly attracts a younger, predominately female, set as well.
The Restaurant is bright and spacious with windows overlooking Union Street. The décor exudes some distinction. Walls are buttermilk and adorned with clocks from next-door neighbour, jewellers Jamieson & Carry, and there are large, glass-fronted display cabinets. Tables are in dark, varnished wood – while the chairs have blue cloth backing.
The Victoria offers a wide menu of sandwiches and snacks, e.g. Aberdeenshire beef stew and mushrooms on toast. The "Souperdeal" offers homemade soup of the day with granary bread or oatcakes followed by a pudding. While the "Express Menu" is soup and a filled roll.
Puddings and cakes are displayed on a trolley that is wheeled round to your table. How often does this happen in a tearoom these days? You even get a cake fork.
Teas are house blend, Earl Grey, Darjeeling and Assam. Fruit and herbal infusions are available. Coffees are regular, cappuccino, or café au lait. A caffetierre can be pure Columbian, Kenya, Java and Mocha. Tea and coffee refills are half price. There is also a limited selection of wines, plus Stella Artois.
Waiting staff are efficient and are (perhaps predictably) dressed in black and white. Décor in the restaurant and stairs is well maintained and in our experience the toilets are spotless. The Victoria looks through to Jamieson & Carry's shop that in addition to jewellery displays Swiss watches and precious gifts.
Why would I go there? Traditional tearoom with consistent standards.
Any Negatives? Perhaps too traditional for some.
