Tyninghame Smithy coffee shop is in a low, red sandstone building which possibly dates back to the 1700s. There’s no spreading chestnut tree but you can easily imagine the horses standing outside in the open courtyard, waiting for their turn to be shod. The building has been renovated but retains its original appearance with bare stone walls and new doors which are completely in keeping with the rural background of the building.
It is divided into two areas, the coffee shop and a gift shop which sells good quality gifts with a gardening, environmental theme to them. You could leave with the kids fully equipped to take over the care of your garden!
The thing that strikes you about the food is its freshness, the rolls crispy or soft depending the type, the salad having been newly cut. Tea comes in a pot and coffee (mild, medium, strong or decaf) in a cafetiere. Soup and filled rolls or baguettes are on offer with fillings like smoked salmon and cream cheese, roast beef and horseradish, brie and red onion, salami and cream cheese. There is also a wide selection of cakes. On the day we were there, toasted tea cakes were on offer rather than scones.
Why would I go there? Consistently excellent fare in a quaint setting.
Any Negatives? Limited seating when busy.
Before or After
1. From Tyninghame drive just over a mile on the A198 towards North Berwick then turn right onto Lime Tree Walk. At the end of this (again just over a mile) you come to a car park. A walk takes you down to the beach where you have the choice of going right and walking round the sandy Hirst. This is like a sandy peninsula jutting out into the salt marsh. Or go left and walk along the beaten track in the trees above the beach to St Baldred’s Cradle. There you can look out for godwits, curlew, dowitcher, greenshanks and whimbrel!
2. Park in the John Muir Country Park outside Dunbar and walk the John Muir Way to Tyninghame for coffee then walk back again. It's about 7 miles ( or 10 according to Mr B.!)
3. Walk among the delightful houses of the planned estate village of Tyninghame which was begun in 1761 having been relocated to provide space for parkland around Tyninghame House, the home of the Earl of Haddington.
