I have to confess that I have never in past decades associated Oban with good food. With a transient population of tourists many of whom only fleetingly visit the town perhaps there has not been the incentive to produce the quality of food to retain clientele. But it seems to me that in recent years food generally on the West Coast is on an upswing. There are now a number of goodish eating-places in Oban – but Julie's is my favourite coffee shop.

Julie's is up a cull de sac just off the sea front and opposite Oban Distillery. There is an attractive fresh green exterior with 4 outside tables, which in good weather seem always to be occupied. The interior is almost classic cosy tearoom with white walls, green carpets, plant pots and a couple of large curtained picture windows. But there is not much of a view – unless you like looking at distilleries! You order at the counter and the waiting staff brings your order to the table.

Coffees include Macciato, Americano and Mochaccino – plus a deluxe version of the latter with whipped cream and chocolate flakes. There is Earl Grey, fruit and herbal teas. Cakes, pastries and scones are all bakes on the premises.

Sandwiches come in three price options from egg mayonnaise through to Prawn Marie Rose. Add the homemade soup with crusty bread and you get Julies "Soup & Sandwich Special". Toasted croissants and ciabattas are also available with a choice of fillings, including Chicken, brie and cranberry, and Flaky smoked salmon from Feochan Mhor smokehouse just south of Oban together with cream cheese. Other offerings include Sweet cured herrings and grilled goats cheese. Daily specials are shown on a blackboard.

Why would I go there?  In our view the best tearoom or coffee shop in Oban.

Any Negatives?  Always seems to be busy.

Before or After
1. Visit the Scottish Sea Life Sanctuary which is 9 miles north of Oban - see www.sealsanctuary.co.uk

2. Take the 45 minute CalMac ferry crossing to Craignure in Mull (www.calmac.co.uk) and visit colourful Tobermory, better known as Balamory of the children's TV program.
