Arran is often said to be Scotland in miniature and The Coffee Pot at the north end of Whiting Bay provides a welcome stop on your journey around the island. The coffee shop is easy to miss as it is in part of a line of white painted cottages and set behind a garden wall. You enter the garden through a rustic arch and various flowers, hydrangeas and assorted plants tumble over the walls, up the walls and generally provide shelter from the winds that blow in from the Firth of Clyde beyond.
An outside seat or a table at the window are the preferred seating areas so that the view across to the mainland can be enjoyed. On the other hand, the walls are hung with watercolours of the nearby scenery by local artists as well as more contemporary pieces of art so you can enjoy the scenery at second hand.
Service is cheery and welcoming. Soup, toasted sandwiches, panini, baked potatoes and burgers are offered as well as excellent home baking - fresh cream meringues, apple pies, scones and carrot cake. Your sweet tooth is further satisfied with various ice cream confections such as splits and sundaes or hot fudge cake, clootie dumpling and pancakes.
Why would I go there? A pleasant stopping off place on your circumnavigation of the island.
Any Negatives? The inside area is somewhat functional in appearance
Before or After
1. There is a lovely 4km walk up to Glenashdale Falls. Also not far from the falls to the northern side of the glen is an Iron Age Fort and a little further south the Giants’ Caves. Park your car on the seafront, south of Ashdale Bridge, Whiting Bay.
2. The beach at Whiting Bay is a mixture of pebble, rock-pool and sand and makes an exiting play area for children especially if the tide is out.
3. Take a trip over to Holy Island a couple of miles offshore. It was the site of an early Christian monastery but today is a Buddhist retreat.
